A compelling and persuasive pitch is key for social change organisations to secure impact investments and nonprofit grants. A pitch will usually only last a few minutes, however, getting to that final product can take hours of crafting and fine-tuning, with feedback and support required from all parties involved. In this course, Head of Content and Strategy at Think HQ Stefan Delatovic takes you through the steps to craft an excellent pitch.
Hi there and welcome to Lumin!

I’m Stefan, and over the next six lessons I’ll be discussing how to perfect your pitch to external bodies in a bid for social change.

A compelling and persuasive pitch is key for social change organisations to secure impact investments and nonprofit grants. A pitch will usually only last a few minutes, however, getting to that final product can take hours of crafting and fine-tuning, with feedback and support required from all parties involved.

First up, it’s important to consider what your pitch is trying to achieve, and what the best way is to explain your mission and the problem you are solving. What does success look like? You could be looking for money, or a grant, pro bono work, or support in the form of a partnership.

Look at the big picture - all pitches are about change: making things better, faster, more effective, more efficient. So how do you aim to create change?

Most importantly be clear on why people should care about what you are pitching, and how their support will make a tangible difference towards your impact. This involves understanding a concept called “The Wedge”, which refers to getting your audience across the line with a well-defined point of difference, a very small - but just as integral - part of your pitch. More on this later.

This course will take you through the process of establishing your vision, and then calculating the steps necessary to achieve it. We’ll discuss how to establish your point of difference, the importance of thinking outside the box, and how to measure the long term impact you have.

But let’s start at the beginning - how to create a successful pitch using the theory of change.
